Do you ever feel you don’t quite fit in with your fashion choices?
If you do, then hopefully this is the post for you.
I’m going to try and inspire you to be you, to feel great and confident and on top of the world with how you decide to dress yourself.
Let’s just take a minute and remember that we all dress differently. We all prefer different styles, different cuts, different fabrics, different shapes, colours, the list could go on.
And that’s ok. Wouldn’t it be so dull if we all looked the same?
Your style is YOURS. And yours only.
We can have similar tastes, but really the way you dress is completely individual, and I have discovered that how you dress can affect your state of mind, and your confidence. Might sound daft, but it’s true.
It’s only in the past year or so that I’ve become honestly comfortable with my own style. I’ve stopped trying to fit into a mould that I’m not that right for. (Square peg, round hole type vibe again here).
Sometimes it’s hard to break out and be different, especially if we have an alternative aesthetic to our best friends, our colleagues, whoever we spend time around.
For example, I’ve been wearing skinny jeans for years, just because that’s what everyone does/did, when really, I don’t like the shape, I don’t find them comfy and I’d much rather be in a pair of boyfriend jeans, or trouser/chinos. So why didn’t I just wear what I wanted?
Dare I say I wasn’t brave enough?
Again, a further example. Shirts suit me. Trousers suit me. Tailored clothes suit me. Yet, I’ve always felt a little bit daft wearing those things, even though they look and feel good, because shouldn’t I be more casual? I mean, I should really dress down right?
Shouldn’t I look more normal?
TO HELL WITH NORMAL.
The first thing I decided to do was have a massive wardrobe purge. I threw out, ebayed and depoped bags and bags and bags of stuff. (I still have way too many clothes mind).
Everything that I owned that made me feel mediocre had to go.
Why even bother wearing clothes that don’t make you feel excellent about yourself?!
Might as well doss about in a smelly old bin bag.
Once all the tat had gone, what was I left with? Well, actually quite a lot. And it turns out the things that I was left with were my shirts, my trousers, my loose midi dresses. Clothes that had been lost beneath the layers of mediocre, normal, bog standard clothes.
Clothes that made me feel good. Clothes that made me feel like ME.
(Please ignore all the heinous mirror shots.. If anyone knows of an Instagram Husband going free, let me know yeah?)
Who cares if you have your own thing going on. I’d much rather oogle someones nutty outfit than look at yet another gaggle of girls with the identical teenage black jeans, crop tops and nikes. Be yourself. Find your fashion and truly own it.
Let it tell a story of who you are.
So I’ve started wearing what I’ve always really wanted to wear.
And guess what? I feel so good. I feel confident. I feel attractive.
Getting dressed has turned from a stressful experience back into an enjoyable and rewarding one.
My clothes make me powerful.
